Why Manchester United should sign David Brooks if Jadon Sancho move fails
According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are eyeing Bournemouth starlet David Brooks as a potential alternative for primary transfer target Jadon Sancho.
Brooks came through the youth ranks at United’s local rivals Manchester City. The 22-year-old left the club in 2014, joining Sheffield United. Having spent a large amount of time with the age group sides, Brooks managed 37 appearances for the Blades, scoring 3 goals and assisting 8 more.
In 2018, Brooks signed for Bournemouth and enjoyed a fine debut campaign. The 22-year-old finished the 2018/19 campaign with 7 goals and 5 assists in 33 matches. However, an ankle injury sustained last July has meant that the Welshman has not featured even once this season.
Right-wing a problem for Manchester United
The right-wing is a problem position that has been an issue for the 20-time English champions for a number of years now. Without an out-and-out right-sided winger in the ranks, the Red Devils had resorted to using the likes of Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira, to mixed success.
Daniel James’ arrival did ease the problem somewhat, but United still lack natural wingers in the squad. Hence, adding a new wide player would be a smart decision by the Red Devils. And while top target Jadon Sancho would be a fine addition to the side, should United fail to sign him, Brooks would represent a decent alternative.
True that the 22-year-old hasn’t kicked a ball since July last year due to a serious ankle injury. However, Brooks showed what he is capable of in his debut campaign with Bournemouth. His tally of 7 goals was the joint third-best for the Cherries in the Premier League last season. In addition, he also contributed with 5 assists as well.
What makes him a valuable asset is the fact that he can play on the right flank or slot in as an auxiliary striker as well. This sort of versatility would come in very handy for Manchester United should they sign him in the summer. His potential arrival would address the long-standing need of a quality right-sided winger, while also adding depth and quality to the squad.

Verdict
Brooks has not featured even once this season due to injury. However, the 22-year-old enjoyed a sensational debut campaign in the Premier League last time out.
Young and filled with potential, he fits perfectly into the mould of players Solskjaer has signed at Manchester United. Furthermore, his ability to play in a multitude of roles would add more depth to the squad. Should the Red Devils miss out on Jadon Sancho, the Welshman would be a handy alternative for them.
