According to a report from The Athletic, Manchester United are keeping tabs on Valencia winger Ferran Torres, who could be available for a lesser price than his £89m release clause this summer.
The 20-year-old Torres is a product of the Valencia youth academy. The winger made his first-team debut for Los Che in November 2017 in a Copa del Rey clash against Real Zaragoza. Since then, he has grown into a regular member of the first-team.
Till date, Torres has made 88 appearances for the La Liga giants, bagging 9 goals and 11 assists in the process.
While there have been signs of progress under Solskjaer, the gulf between United and their rivals at the top is still too wide. And in order to address that, the 20-time English champions need to bolster their squad further in a few areas.
The lack of natural wingers in the squad is something that Manchester United should look to rectify, especially given the direct, counter-attacking style they play under Solskjaer. Apart from Daniel James and Tahith Chong, there are no out-and-out wide players within the ranks. So, bringing in a new winger would serve them well for the seasons ahead.
Having said that, Ferran Torres of Valencia would be a viable option for Manchester United. At 20, Torres doesn’t have a great deal of experience yet. But he has been one of Valencia’s better performers this season.
In 35 appearances across all competitions this term, the Spaniard has chipped in with a total tally of 6 goals and 7 assists. In comparison, United’s James has 4 goals and 7 assists in 37 matches so far in his debut season at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old has demonstrated immense potential so far. And bringing him in would strengthen Manchester United further, adding more depth and quality to the squad. This, in turn, would help them compete strongly for multiple honours.
Manchester United’s problems on the right flank are well-known. While Daniel James’ arrival has helped address it to an extent, adding more depth and quality would hold the Red Devils in good stead for the coming years. To that end, signing Ferran Torres would be a good move.
At 20, the Spaniard has shown great potential in his career. Furthermore, he fits in well in the mould of players Solskjaer has been signing since taking over. Hence, United should move for the Valencia ace in the summer.
