Manchester United should not hesitate to offload Marcus Rashford in January

Italian champions Juventus are plotting a £65million swoop on Manchester United ace Marcus Rashford after the 20-year-old’s scintillating displays for England against Spain in the UEFA Nations League.

The English international has started only three games for the Red Devils this term in the Premier League and has been at the receiving end of Jose Mourinho’s inconsistent team selection.

The 20-year-old enjoyed a fantastic breakout season at Old Trafford in the 2015-16 campaign and scored 8 goals across all competitions. He also became United’s youngest scorer in European competitions, scoring twice against Midtjylland in the Europa League.

He has established himself as a regular for the Red Devils since his breakout season and has made a total of 131 appearances for the club across all competitions where he has netted on 33 occasions.

Rashford has been deemed as a player with a massive potential and the youngster has shown glimpses of his brilliance over the course of his three seasons at the club. However, he doesn’t seem to be maturing too fast as a centre-forward. To be honest, he has shown a lot of promise but he hasn’t really improved to a great extent since his breakout season.

With all due respect to his talent and credentials, Rashford’s progress in the developmental stage of his career hasn’t been meteoric by any means. In fact, his progress seems to have stalled. The 20-year-old had given rise to a lot of expectations with a wonderful breakout season but he hasn’t lived up to the expectations at the club.

It would be difficult to criticise a player of Rashford’s calibre given that he has already played so many games for the Red Devils at such a tender age. However, the main problem lies in the fact that he is inconsistent. He is not the sort of player who seems to have two good games on a trot.

It was a similar case with him this weekend as well. After doing exceptionally well for England against Spain, Rashford was given s start by Jose Mourinho against Chelsea but the youngster failed to grab his opportunity. In fact, he disappointed and let the team down with some poor decision-making in the final third.

Another thing that should go against Rashford is his lack of discipline and inappropriate decision-making. He is that same erratic wide forward that he was three seasons back and has done little homework on his finishing.

It is a common sight to see him losing his shape in front of goal and has the tendency to fire his shots high and wide. The 20-year-old hasn’t worked on the tactical aspect of his game either and misses out on a lot of chances due to poor game awareness.

In other words, he shows energy and endeavours on the pitch but the end product is not always of the highest quality. Hence, it will not be a bad option for United to cash in on their talented youngster.

United have the likes of Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez and Juan Mata, all of whom are capable of playing at wide positions. Anthony Martial will be out of contract next summer and the club should do everything to entice him to stay beyond his current contract.

Furthermore, United have been linked with a number of right wingers including Ivan Perisic and Ante Rebic (Metro), which will result in Rashford slipping further down the pecking order at Old Trafford.

Suffice to say, it is high time for Manchester United to cash in on Marcus Rashford given that the move will fetch valuable funds for the club to line up other transfers.
