Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign Jose Gaya?

Back in June 2018, a report from the Metro claimed Manchester United were interested in signing Valencia left-back Jose Gaya.

The Spaniard, 22, has had a solid season in La Liga, with the club fighting hard to achieve a place in the top four. He helped Valencia reach the semi-finals of the Europa League, where the Spanish outfit were beaten by Arsenal last week.

Jose Gaya, who is contracted at the Mestalla until 2023, has made 47 appearances across all competitions this campaign, registering a goal and an assist. His productivity has reduced to a certain extent but his consistent performances under Marcelino should be enough for Manchester United to revive their interest and sign him in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is expected to lead an overhaul of the squad in the wake of another disappointing campaign in which the Red Devils were left well off the pace set by Premier League winners Manchester City and runners-up Liverpool.

The Red Devils ended the campaign with an embarrassing 2-0 defeat at home to relegated Cardiff City which further demonstrated the mammoth task the Norwegian has in his hands.

First and foremost, Solskjaer needs to sort out his defence if he wants to achieve success with the Red Devils. The full-back area also requires strengthening, with Antonio Valencia having the left the club at the end of this season and Ashley Young at the wrong side of 30.

Diogo Dalot has shown a lot of promise and is expected to be trusted more in the first season, while Luke Shaw’s hard work paid off with him winning the Players’ Player of the Year and the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year awards.

Shaw enjoyed a consistent 2018/19 campaign with United, but if he’s to improve and take his game to the next level, the England international needs competition. That’s virtually not present in the squad and Solskjaer must address it with the signing of Jose Gaya.

A modern-day full-back, Gaya is blessed with bundles of energy, pace to burn and tactical nous to slot in perfectly in the left-back position. He can put in delicious crosses in the box as well as is quite able to link up efficiently with the attackers. The Spaniard is a decent passer and doesn’t overcomplicate things, making him a reliable player while in possession of the ball.

Tenacious, aggressive and industrious, the 23-year-old will provide a definite threat on the left of the pitch to United. Not only that, Gaya’s signing will also allow Solskjaer to rotate him with Shaw at the left-back position.

Verdict

At 23, Gaya’s best years are ahead of him and Solskjaer should definitely consider him to bolster his defensive ranks. There’s every chance the move could work wonders for United if it goes through in the summer.
