Why Manchester United should sign Emre Can from Juventus

According to German outlet Bild (h/t The Sun), Manchester United are one of the five clubs interested in signing Juventus outcast Emre Can.

Emre Can, 26, joined Juventus on a free transfer from Liverpool in the summer of 2018 but has struggled for form and minutes. The German was left out of Juventus’ official Champions League list at the beginning of the season and has managed only eight Serie A appearances so far this term under Maurizio Sarri.

The report (h/t The Sun) adds that Borussia Dortmund are the frontrunners to sign the midfielder, while the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and Bayern Munich also remain interested.

Meanwhile, Manchester United have endured an inconsistent campaign and are currently fifth in the table, six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side has been hampered with injuries to key players and the Red Devils boss should bolster his squad, with the race for the top four heating up.

Solskjaer has been without Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay for most of January. The former underwent an operation on his right ankle earlier this month and his absence has only worsened the club’s problems.

Marcus Rashford is also set for a period of time on the sidelines, thus placing a greater emphasis on the club’s need to do some business in the transfer window. With the Red Devils lacking quality and depth in the midfield, Solskjaer should go for Emre Can.

Can joined Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen in 2014 and managed 166 appearances across all competitions in his four-year spell at Anfield, scoring 14 goals. He also has solid European experience, whilst earning 25 caps for Germany.

A versatile player, the Germany international of Turkish descent can play different roles across the midfield. The former Bayer Leverkusen man would bolster United’s options and add depth to their squad.

Verdict

United must bring in a central midfielder as quickly as possible to strengthen that area of the squad. Injuries to key performers have ruined the Red Devils’ campaign and hence, the Norwegian tactician should attempt to secure Can’s signature this month.
