Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils must sign James Maddison

According to the Daily Record, Manchester United have made contact with Leicester City ace James Maddison over a £60million summer transfer move.

James Maddison, 22, joined Leicester City from Norwich City last summer and enjoyed an excellent debut season in the Premier League. The playmaker scored seven goals and assisted as many to help the Foxes finish ninth in the table. He was named Leicester’s Young Player of the Season at the end of season awards.

The 22-year-old’s displays have caught the attention of Manchester United, who are in for a squad rebuild under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Despite a rejuvenation at the beginning of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign, United had a miserable season, finishing sixth in the Premier League, while they failed to lift any silverware. If the Red Devils top brass want to buy into the ethos of their Norwegian tactician, they have to start recruiting young, promising and hungry talents.

United are yet to sign a single player this summer transfer window, which is kind of a surprise because Solskjaer wants his club to complete all the transfer dealings before July. More than anything in the world, Solskjaer has to make sure that his team is fully fit and ready in time for the new Premier League season.

The Mancunian club conceded a club record number of goals, which shows just what they need. However, they also struggled to score goals during the business end of the campaign as Solskjaer’s side missed out on the top four. At the moment, one of the key things the Reds need is more creativity and flair in the final third of the pitch, which Alexis Sanchez has failed to deliver since joining from Arsenal last year.

It is why United need someone like James Maddison in their team. A very talented individual, Maddison primarily assumes the duties of a no.10, although he can play in a midfield three or on the left wing. He can run without losing possession of the ball at a really good pace, which causes a lot of headaches for the opposition defenders.

The former Norwich ace is a fantastic dribbler and possesses the ability to pick the right pass in the final third. He works extremely hard off the ball, which makes him a perfect fit for Solskjaer’s system at Old Trafford. Furthermore, Maddison’s set-piece expertise will prove to be a massive bonus.

Verdict

A really talented and hardworking player, Maddison has done very well in his first Premier League season and with time will only improve. He will add some youthful exuberance to United’s frontline that has struggled to fire on all cylinders last season.
