Why Manchester United should hold onto Dean Henderson amidst interest from Chelsea

According to The Sun, Manchester United have offered Dean Henderson a bumper new contract deal to ward off interest from rivals Chelsea.

Henderson, who is on loan with Premier League newcomers Sheffield United, has been given an improved deal of £100,000-a-week by the Red Devils in a bid to keep him in the side. This is the fourth contract the 23-year-old has been offered despite not even starting once for the Red Devils.

With David de Gea still being their preferred first-choice keeper, Henderson has found chances hard to come by. This had seen him being loaned out to several other lower division clubs until he had a breakthrough with Sheffield United last season.

He helped the Blades under Chris Wilder achieve promotion to the top-flight last season and played a major role in it. He has continued his good this season in the Premier League and has been pretty impressive so far.

With 10 clean sheets from to his name, he is only second behind Burnley keeper Nick Pope, who has 11 to his credit in the league this season. Also, he has just conceded 22 goals from a total of 27 matches that he has played until now.

Henderson’s performances have been so good that the Blades have conceded just 25 goals in 28 league games, which has seen them rise to 7th place in the table.

His consistent and disciplined show in between the sticks has seen Chelsea come out willing to offer a sum of around £50million for the young star.

The ball is well and truly in Henderson’s court though, with Manchester United’s No.1 keeper De Gea not at his best this season. United’s second-choice keeper Sergio Romero, meanwhile, has turned 33 this season and United clearly need someone in their ranks to give De Gea the competition in the near future.

Verdict

Manchester United must see Henderson as their first-choice keeper in the coming years. It would be wise of them to hold on to him before some other clubs tempt the youngster with a better offer.
