Fox Sports has linked Tottenham superstar Christian Eriksen with a move to Manchester United next summer and while it would be an incredible move, will the Danish international be actually required at the club?
The Red Devils have clearly had their issues this season, with Jose Mourinho leaving and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer coming in. All that said and done, they still need that push to get to where Liverpool and Manchester City are.
That being said, it looks like the club board believes that signing Christian Eriksen could be exactly what they need. After all, given the Danish star’s contract issues, he could be a bargain. At the moment, Eriksen has around 18 months left on his current deal and has so far rejected any offer to sign a new one, amid interest from Real Madrid, Barcelona and a few other sides.
The Daily Mail has further added that while Tottenham are determined to tie the 26-year-old to a new contract, Eriksen has so far shown no interest in signing anything further. To make things worse, the club already know what Barcelona and Real Madrid can offer him and it’s significantly more than what Spurs can especially after building a new stadium.
This has added to their stress. While they will look to reduce their wage bill, the question remains, do Manchester United need another world class midfielder?
They already have Paul Pogba, a World Cup winner who has shown that under the right manager, he can be among the best in the world. They also have Fred who arrived last summer arrival and has held his own alongside some of the best, despite his struggles. But then again, that is the extent of Manchester United’s star power in the midfield.
While they do play with a midfield three, Eriksen’s abilities allow him to play as a central midfielder with no defensive capabilities.
While under Jose Mourinho that would never have worked, under Solskjaer – who could build his team around him and Pogba – it could work to become a brilliant combination. Whether the two stars can work together is another question but in theory, it’s a brilliant duo with a talented front-line.
His transfer fee would be well within range next summer, especially if he keeps stalling on a new contract as Eriksen would then have a year left on his current deal. This would force Tottenham to sell him during the summer rather than lose him for free at the end of the season or even worse, lose him for half his value during the January transfer window next year.
