Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should go for Timo Werner?

RB Leipzig manager Ralf Rangnick has told star striker Timo Werner to sign a new deal or ‘change clubs’.

The German international, 23, is about to enter the final year of his contract and Leipzig risk losing him on a free unless he agrees to a new contract or is sold this summer. The centre-forward is reluctant to agree to a new deal, which could force Leipzig to cash in on their prized asset in the summer transfer window.

Given Timo Werner could be available on a potential bargain, Manchester United must make a move for him. The German forward has been linked with the Red Devils for some time now and this summer transfer window will be the ideal time for the Premier League giants to sign him.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wishes to bring transformations in the squad ahead of the next season. This past season, the Red Devils were all over the place defensively and at times lacked potency going forward. The team was not only devoid of invention in the final third, but also the strikers were not clinical enough with the chances they got.

Marcus Rashford was Solskjaer’s main man in attack, which meant Romelu Lukaku had to settle for a role on the bench. Lukaku is now seemingly on his way out of Old Trafford, with the Belgian international heavily linked with a move to Inter Milan. His departure will leave Solskjaer with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial as the only options up front, but their finishing still leaves a lot to be desired.

That’s when the signing of Werner would make sense for United. Werner is one of the standout young talents in the Bundesliga and has been prolific in front of goal since signing for Leipzig from Stuttgart in 2016. The Germany international has scored 61 goals in 114 games across all competitions and netted nine times in 24 appearances for his country.

Werner may not be a strong, bulky centre-forward, but he can terrorise the opposition defenders with his movement in and around the box, link-up play and incisive passing in the final third for his fellow attackers. The German has pace in abundance, and that coupled with his agility and dribbling skills make him a nightmare for defenders.

The 23-year-old is still very young and could solve United’s problems up front for many years to come. He could prove to be a big hit in the Premier League, with his skill-set seemingly perfectly suited for Solskjaer’s system at Old Trafford.

Verdict

Werner is one of the hottest properties in Europe and it would be a real statement of intent if Manchester United can pull off the signing of the German speedster.
