Manchester United Opinion: Why the Red Devils should sign Matthias Ginter

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is prepping for a long summer of transfer activity after the club’s sixth-placed finish in the Premier League last season. He wants his transfer business completed by the time his squad returns to Carrington at the start of July.

The Metro reports that Manchester United are ready to give Solskjaer a transfer kitty of £200m to improve his squad over the summer. And after an underwhelming sixth-placed finish in the 2018/19 campaign that saw the club miss out on Champions League football, a central defender should remain at the top of the Norwegian tactician’s priority list.

The Red Devils conceded over 50 goals in the Premier League this past season which calls for a major shake up in defence this summer. The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Ashley Young were awful in defence, while Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo spent majority of the campaign on the sidelines.

Although Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw emerged with some credit, United overall remain messy defensively.

That being said, the Reds should reignite their interest in Borussia Monchengladbach defender Matthias Ginter. According to a report from the Manchester Evening News, United were interested in signing Ginter a few years ago, but a deal didn’t materialise.

A product of Freiburg youth system, Ginter made his professional debut in the Bundesliga with his boyhood club, before making the switch to Borussia Dortmund in 2014.

He spent three years at Signal Iduna Park but never really managed to establish himself as a regular starter and he opted to sign for city rivals Monchengladbach in search of more first-team action in 2017.

Since joining Monchengladbach, the German international has been a regular fixture in the team. He has impressed at the back and could be the right player to add some much-needed stability to United’s back-line.

Standing at 6ft 2in, Ginter has a good height for a central defender and his qualities definitely make him an exciting proposition for Solskjaer’s Red army. He doesn’t lose his cool during high-pressure situations and can also make some timely interceptions for his team.

The German World Cup winner is confident on the ball and uses his range of passing to initiate attacks from the back.

A good reader of the game, the ex-Dortmund ace is quite sharp and has a decent turn of pace to make recovery runs. Due to Ginter’s height, he is also an asset to have in the opposition box during set-pieces.

Verdict

The addition of a defender of Ginter’s quality is precisely the type of move which would signal a statement of intent from United. The German is 25 and developing, so luring him to Old Trafford could prove to be a smart piece of business.
