Man United Opinion: Red Devils should replace Romelu Lukaku with Sebastien Haller at all costs

According to Metro, Man United are interested in signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Sebastien Haller this summer, with reports claiming that the Red Devils have scouted the 24-year-old Frenchman over the last few months.

Metro understands that United have lined up Haller as a potential replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who is a transfer target for Inter Milan and the club’s new manager, Antonio Conte. However, the Red Devils would only consider selling the Belgian if Inter meet their £80 million asking price for the striker.

The same source claims that Man United are set for a massive squad overhaul this summer and Red Devils manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to have a spending budget of around £200 million, as the Norwegian looks to address issues in multiple areas of the pitch ahead of the upcoming season.

Haller has carved out a massive reputation for himself in the Bundesliga as a prolific playmaking forward, earning rave reviews for his performances at Frankfurt over the course of the last two seasons.

The 24-year-old enjoyed another fruitful campaign in the German top-flight this term and played a key role in the club’s march to the Europa League semi-finals, accumulating an impressive 20 goals and 12 assists in 40 appearances across all competitions.

A product of Auxerre’s youth system, Haller rose to prominence with his boyhood club in Ligue 2 before earning a move to the Eredivisie with FC Utrecht back in the summer of 2014.

He spent three seasons in The Netherlands and racked up a staggering 51 goals and 17 assists in 98 appearances for Utrecht before being snapped up by Bundesliga outfit Frankfurt back in 2017.

The 24-year-old made an instant impact in his first season in Germany and scored 13 goals in all competitions in his debut season, forming a formidable strike partnership with Luka Jovic. In all competitions combined till date, Haller boasts of a prolific record for Frankfurt, having amassed 33 goals and 19 assists in 77 appearances.

To put things into perspective, Man United could possibly strike gold with the signing of Sebastien Haller this summer, although the Red Devils making a move for the Frenchman solely depends on whether Inter sign Lukaku.

However, United need to understand that they haven’t got the most out of the Belgian since his mega-money move to Old Trafford from Everton a couple of years back and cashing in on him would be a win-win situation for both parties involved.

Standing at 6ft. 3 inches with a towering frame, Haller seemingly has the physicality and the aerial ability to make the step up to the Premier League, although he is not a one-trick pony by any means. Haller has a much better technique as compared to Lukaku, whilst also being head and shoulders above the Belgian in terms of composure, sharpness, agility and decision-making.

A sharp, agile and athletic striker with an incredible eye for goal with both feet and head, Haller is not just a commanding presence inside the box but he is also a natural finisher who can hit the 20-goal mark in a season with ease.

Not only does he combine his intelligent movement with his physicality, aerial ability and poaching instincts to make an impact, but he also boasts of a good eye for a final pass in and around the box.

Adept at holding on to the ball in tight areas, the Frenchman has the ability to link-up effectively with his teammates, with his ability to set up goals with clever flick-ons and lovely one-touch passing making him a complete package up front.

Haller plays with a lot of conviction and his well-rounded attributes should make him a wonderful fit for Solskjaer’s style of play. He is not that much of a target man but he has got the perfect balance in his game to make an impact in the Premier League and it is not difficult to see how and why United would benefit from his presence in their ranks next season.
