Manchester United Opinion: Why Solskjaer should go for Alessio Romagnoli?
According to Italian news outlet Tuttosport, AC Milan could sell their skipper Alessio Romagnoli this summer to comply with the Financial Fair Play rules if the club doesn’t qualify for next season’s Champions League. (h/t Football Italia)
AC Milan play their final game of the season against SPAL and will look to win it to give themselves a chance for playing Champions League football next term.
A win won’t be enough, though, as either Atalanta or Inter—third and fourth respectively on the Serie A table—will need to drop points on the final day of the 2018/19 campaign to see Milan qualify for Europe’s elite competition.
The report claims Milan would be forced to cash in on the Italian defender if they miss out a place in the top four. They would want around €70m-€80m for Alessio Romagnoli, who they signed from AS Roma back in 2015.
That being said, Manchester United should revive their interest and sign Romagnoli in this summer transfer window.
Manchester United are starting to take aim on targets for their rebuild quickly, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer intends to get to work now so the squad is largely settled by the time pre-season gets underway. After a forgettable 2018/19 campaign, the Red Devils need fresh faces that would not take much time in settling down and quickly make an impact at the club.
Fixing the mess in defence is of utmost priority if Solskjaer wants to challenge for the title as well as win trophies next season. Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw were the only United defenders to emerge with some credit in what was an underwhelming campaign.
Solskjaer needs to make tough calls and be ruthless in his approach in the summer. The Norwegian has to make a stamp on his team, which desperately lacks a leader in defence.
Alessio Romagnoli could exactly be the player that United needs at the moment. The Italy international was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford in March. However, with United in search for defensive reinforcements, Solskjaer should look to bring the AC Milan skipper.

When building from the back, Romagnoli’s presence of mind, vision and ball-playing skills will play a massive role at United, even though Solskjaer’s system isn’t possession-based. But having a player like Romagnoli alongside Lindelof would make the Reds’ defence solid and compact. The Italian is powerful and a tough tackler, whilst having good pace through the ground.
Verdict
If Solskjaer can convince Romagnoli that United is the club for him where he can be the leader, organise their defence and continue his development, it makes sense for the Red Devils to go all in for him.
