Manchester United Opinion: Meunier signing must become a priority
According to reports arising from Manchester Evening News, Premier League giants Manchester United are said to be eyeing up a potential move for Belgian World Cup Star Thomas Meunier in the summer.
The 27-year-old would come in as a direct replacement for Antonio Valencia, who has gradually been excluded from the side over the course of the campaign.
The fact that Meunier is contracted to his current employers Paris Saint Germain could come as a roadblock to the United chiefs but it has been suggested in the report that the defender has dropped multiple hints about his future in the Ligue 1.
Formerly of Club Brugge, the Belgian international right-back was signed by the French giants in the summer of 2016.
Since making the switch to the French capital, he has become a key feature at both club and international level. Since making his debut for Belgium in November 2013, he has played in 36 professional matches for his country and has even managed to notch up a fairly impressive 6 goals.
Certainly not small in stature, the Belgian can be described as a big defender but he gets around the pitch with apparent ease. Able to move the ball forward quickly, his crossing and finishing skills in the final third are quite commendable.
Given the experience he has, settling into the Premier League shouldn’t be too much of a problem.
The fact that Antonio Valencia is 33 now is certainly going to be a problem for United in the coming seasons. While Diogo Dalot is the man they’ve seemingly chosen as a potential successor, Matteo Darmian has been a fringe player in the United ranks. The addition of a player like Meunier could be exactly what United need.
He possesses the right blend of attacking defensive capabilities to prosper in a league as competitive as the Premier League and as he’s made clear from his stellar displays at the recent World Cup, his quality on the ball certainly needn’t be questioned.
The fact that he was the undisputed number one at a club as big as PSG is further proof of this fact.

While Diogo Dalot in specific wouldn’t be very happy about a high-profile full-back such as Meunier arriving at Old Trafford to effective replace him in the side, United fans should be hoping that the giant Belgian is attracted by the project.
Irrespective of whether or not he signs, finding a replacement for Valencia must one of their top agendas and Meunier seems like a fairly good option at that.
