Man City Opinion: Citizens should offer fresh deals to Sane and Zinchenko
According to ESPN sources, Man City have opened negotiations with Leroy Sane and Oleksandr Zinchenko over fresh deals to extend their stay at the Etihad.
The reigning Premier League champions have been successful in securing the futures of some of their key first-team stars, with the likes of Aymeric Laporte, Kevin de Bruyne, Gabriel Jesus, Raheem Sterling and Bernardo Silva all putting pen to paper on new contracts.
ESPN claims that City have been in talks with Sane over a new deal since last summer, with the German’s current contract set to expire in June 2021.
Sane, who joined City from Schalke for a fee of £37 million back in 2016 has established himself as a regular on the left for Pep Guardiola. He has been in terrific form in the Premier League this term as well, accumulating 8 goals and 9 assists from 25 appearances in the Premier League.
Zinchenko, who also moved to the Etihad back in 2016, made 6 Premier League starts last season but the 22-year-old Ukrainian international has progressed by leaps and bounds under the guidance of Guardiola.
Forced to play in an unfamiliar left-back position to cover for the absence of Fabian Delph and Benjamin Mendy, Zinchenko has gradually proven his worth as an important squad player for the Citizens.
The youngster has made a total of 21 appearances in all competitions this season, including 7 starts in the Premier League where he has bagged 3 assists.
City’s approach in the transfer market this season has been very cautious, with Riyad Mahrez being the only marquee signing to have arrived at the Etihad last summer.
They have been more busy securing the futures of their existing players, tying several of them down to new contracts. This can be regarded as a very tactful and diplomatic approach from the club hierarchy, who are probably aware of the abundance of talent they already have in their ranks.
The Citizens need to keep hold of their core of first-team players to build a strong platform for continued success in the Premier League and Sane and Zinchenko have made a massive impact this season. Sergio Aguero, Sterling and Mahrez have impressed with plenty of goals but Sane’s contribution has also been invaluable to the side.
Be it cutting inside from the left to link up with his teammates, exploiting the spaces down the flanks with his pace, flair and crossing ability or finding the net at crucial moments- Sane has done it all for Pep Guardiola and Man City.
The German has been an absolute livewire down the left and Man City have relied heavily on him to unlock stubborn defences with his pace, power, guile and creativity. To sum it up, he has shown high levels of maturity by putting his hands up when the team has needed him the most.
Meanwhile, Zinchenko has done everything that City have asked from him this season. He came into the club as a versatile attacking midfielder but he has filled in admirably at left-back, which probably saved Man City a fortune in the January transfer window.
To add to that, Zinchenko has also impressed with his quality on the ball and wonderful eye for picking out key passes, venturing forward with pace and linking up with Sane down the left.
The Ukrainian boasts of a pass accuracy percentage of 92.6, including 3 successful long passes, 1 key pass, 2.1 aerial duels, 2.3 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per game in the Premier League this term, figures which clearly show that he has made a notable difference.
