Why Man United should go all out to sign Alessio Romagnoli in the summer
According to a report by Calciomercato, Manchester United and Chelsea are considering a move to sign AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli in the summer transfer window.
AC Milan sit fourth in the Serie A and Alessio Romagnoli has been a crucial player to their push for Champions League football. The Italian defender’s fine form has also seen him attract interest from Juventus but Milan are desperate to keep hold of their skipper, the report adds.
Keeping that in mind, Manchester United should beat the likes of Chelsea and Juventus to sign Alessio Romagnoli.
United’s need for a central defender has been prevalent since the days of Jose Mourinho, who apparently wanted to sign Harry Maguire ahead of the start of this season. Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has replaced Mourinho at the helm of the club, the Red Devils have looked a lot more stable and composed at the back.
Solskjaer has the likes of Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Marcos Rojo as his options in central defence but following the defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of Champions League Round of 16, there is a lot of scope for improvement at Old Trafford.
Romagnoli would fit the bill perfectly at United. He has earned rave reviews for his solid performances at the back for AC Milan and has established himself as one of the most composed defenders in Italian football.
A technically gifted centre-back, the Italian is a classy operator of the ball, can bring the ball out from the back with ease and initiate attacks with his fantastic distribution. Romagnoli is a physically imposing defender and gets off the ground quickly and times his jump to perfection to win aerial duels.
The 24-year-old’s ability to drive with the ball from defence will bring a whole new element to United’s build-up play. The Reds are in dire need of a strong and solid defender, and Romagnoli’s combination of aerial dominance, technical abilities and European pedigree would offer a fresh impetus to Solskjaer’s side’s ability to start attacks from the defence.
Being a left-footed defender, the former AS Roma man will also bring balance to the defence and would be the ideal player to partner Lindelof. Without a shadow of doubt, Romagnoli is better than the current crop of defenders Solskjaer has in his ranks and would bring in the winning mentality, leadership qualities and experience to this side.
Already possessing an exciting attacking unit consisting of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard, adding a top defender like Romagnoli in the summer would be a statement of intent from United ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
