Manchester United have had their issues this season, and among many of them are concerns about superstar Paul Pogba’s future at the club. Interest from Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid and other sides have been a massive cause for concern, with things heating up a little after the summer window slammed shut.
Now while things have calmed down, latest reports from ESPN have revealed that Juventus will offer Douglas Costa, a top Manchester United during the summer for the Frenchman. The question at the moment for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is should the deal be made in the summer or never ever? The answer if not an obvious one, is the fact that Pogba is a class act and swapping him for anybody other than another class act makes no sense whatsoever.
Not to mention that Douglas Costa is a 28-year-old winger, who will not get any younger for an in his prime 25-year-old Paul Pogba. Now with Pogba’s resurgence under Solskjaer, the deal if anything should be cash plus a player one, given the fact that Barcelona and even Real Madrid still remain interested in him. Costa, on the other hand, has struggled to make an impact for Juventus this season, having watched himself get replaced by Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 28-year-old has made just 18 appearances all season, with 14 appearances coming off the bench and that hasn’t helped his production. So far, Costa is yet to find the back of the net this season and has further added only two assists as compared to his 13 assists last season. This is among the many reasons why the move doesn’t make sense for Manchester United, but then again it does for Ed Woodward, so maybe the Manchester United chairman sees something in the Brazilian.
However, given the fact that the Red Devils do have Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, and Alexis Sanchez to play as wingers, they will have to let someone go. All four wingers are crucial stars at the club and while Sanchez has struggled to make an impact since joining the club, the Chilean could be the odd man out.
If Manchester United really want Douglas Costa, maybe they should offer Sanchez as a potential swap option. A like for like forward and Sanchez does have a history of doing well in the Serie A and could be interested in playing second fiddle to Cristiano Ronaldo.
