Markieff played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks before being drafted 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2011 NBA Draft. In 2020, he won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Morris attended the University of Kansas and majored in American studies. He was named to the Big 12 second team all-conference as a junior for the Jayhawks in 2011. He and his brother, Marcus, signed with a sports agent in Los Angeles and declared their intent to play in the 2011 NBA draught. After his junior season, Fox Sports named him to the Fifth Team All-America.
The Phoenix Suns selected Morris 13th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. Marcus, his twin brother was drafted by the Houston Rockets five minutes later. On January 8, 2012, he had his first professional double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 109-93 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.
