Markieff played college basketball for the Kansas Jayhawks before being drafted 13th overall by the Phoenix Suns in the 2011 NBA Draft. In 2020, he won an NBA championship with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Morris attended the University of Kansas and majored in American studies. He was named to the Big 12 second team all-conference as a junior for the Jayhawks in 2011. He and his brother, Marcus, signed with a sports agent in Los Angeles and declared their intent to play in the 2011 NBA draught. After his junior season, Fox Sports named him to the Fifth Team All-America.

The Phoenix Suns selected Morris 13th overall in the 2011 NBA Draft. Marcus, his twin brother was drafted by the Houston Rockets five minutes later. On January 8, 2012, he had his first professional double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 109-93 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Because of the 2011 NBA lockout, Morris averaged 19.8 points and 9.8 rebounds in his first Summer League game in 2012. He maintained his weight of 245 pounds after this period while gaining 13 pounds of muscle. On November 21, 2012, Morris made his first start of the season, scoring 16 points against the reigning champions, the Miami Heat.

Morris signed a multi-year contract extension with the Phoenix Suns on September 29, 2014. On November 17, 2014, he set a career high with 30 points against the Boston Celtics.

On February 18, 2016, Morris was traded to the Washington Wizards for DeJuan Blair, Kris Humphries, and a 2016 Top-9 protected first-round draft pick. The next day, he made his Wizards debut, scoring six points and grabbing two rebounds in 22 minutes against his brother’s team, the Detroit Pistons.

Morris joined the Oklahoma City Thunder on February 20, 2019.

On July 6, 2019, Morris agreed to terms with the Detroit Pistons. Morris and the Pistons agreed to a buyout on February 21, 2020.
