Matheus Pereira to be offered a new contract by West Brom – Correct decision?
As per Birmingham Live, Matheus Pereira could be in line to receive a new contract from West Brom after his performances in the Premier League. The winger only signed permanently at the start of this season after spending the last one on loan. Despite that, the club is willing to raise his weekly wages by around 50%.

The 24-year-old Brazilian forward is a product of Sporting Lisbon’s academy. He started out for them in 2009. He spent the next few seasons progressing through the youth teams and was finally promoted to the senior team in 2015.
Despite being promoted, he often had to play for the ‘B’ side during that time. He made a paltry 27 appearances for the Portuguese club before being sent on a string of loan spells. The first one was to GD Chaves, where he managed to play 30 games while scoring 8 goals and assisting 5.
His next assignment was at FC Nuremberg but it wasn’t as successful as the previous spell with Chaves. However, his best season would come in 2019 when he was loaned to West Brom. He played a huge part in their promotion campaign, scoring 8 times and assisting another 20 goals in just 42 games (source – Transfermarkt).
Pereira deserves an improved contract
Slaven Bilic was full of praise for the winger and had the following to say of him.
“He is a top player and we need him, I’ve said this to him,” Bilic explained. “For us to maintain, to stay in the Premier League we need our best players not to play good football, not to have flashes, we need them to play great football to achieve what we want to achieve.
“He is definitely one of them. I am pleased with the way he has started; I am pleased with his game against Brighton.
“I’ve shown him that he had four shots which is not bad but he can have six or seven if his positioning is better.
“Everybody has to play well of course. But some players have to have a great season for us to maintain our Premier League status and he is one of them.” (via – Birmingham Live)
The winger might just have one goal and two assists so far this season but it is his overall contribution to the team that has impressed everyone. He was one of the driving forces behind their promotion campaign last season and finished with a staggering 20 assists.

The club were right in making his loan deal permanent. Now that they are thinking of raising his wages from £30,000 per week to £45,000, they are taking the right decision. Pereira clearly deserves an improved contract after all he has done for the club in the last season and half.
