The Egyptian tennis pro – Mayar Sherif continued her rich vein of form in WTA 125 finals as she won the Copa LP Chile title on Sunday.
Mayar Sherif entered the tournament as the top seed and dominated her way to the final. She defeated the likes of Fernanda Astete, Brenda Fruhvirtova, Emma Navarro, and Caroline Dolehide en route to the final. Sherif, who came into the tournament after capturing the Emilia-Romagna Open title, faced Kateryna Baindl in the final.
The 26-year-old managed to come back strongly after losing the first set and eventually won the match 3-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5 against the unseeded Baindl in three hours.
It has been a breakthrough season for Sherif, who broke into the top 50 for the first time in her career in July. She has now won 4 WTA 125 finals and is yet to lose one. This was the first time she won in three sets in the finals of a WTA event. Baindl gave Sherif a good run for her money and the latter needed five championship points before closing out the match.
The world No. 50 teamed up with Tamara Zidansek and faced the top-seeded team of Yana Sizikova and Aldila Sutjiadi in the finals of the doubles event in the Copa LP Chile.
Sizikova and Sutjiadi blew away their opponents in the first set. However, Sherif and Zidansek bounced back and captured the second set. The match was eventually won by Sizikova and Sutjiadi 6-1, 3-6, 10-7.
This would have been the second doubles title win for Sherif in 2022. She won the WTA 125 event in Karlsruhe in May with Panna Udvardy.
