Pablo Carreno Busta saved three match points against Casper Ruud to eventually knock the Norweigan out of the Barcelona Open quarterfinals.
In a game that lasted over five hours long, Pablo Carreno Busta managed to get a 4-6 7-6 (10-8) 6-3 victory over Casper Ruud in the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open. And fans on social media wasted no time mocking the Norwegian for failing to capitalize on his advantages.
Ruud managed to win the first set with a break in the 10th game. The 23-year-old then earned three match points when Carreno Busta was serving at 4-5 in the second set. However, Busta held serve after five deuces and sealed the tie-break 10-8 on his sixth set point after leading 6-3.
In the third set, Carreno Busta won four consecutive games with two breaks to open up a 5-2 lead after being broken at 2-1 down. The Spaniard eventually sealed the match when he served for it after nearly six hours of hard work.
Carreno Busto will now face Diego Schwartzman in the semifinals of the Barcelona Open. But fans on social media didn’t hold back with their harsh words for Ruud. It was also the first time in 51 clay-court matches that Ruud lost a match after winning the first set.
On Twitter, one Tennis fan wrote, “Casper Ruud claims that he is one of the best players on clay. Hard to believe him.” while another added, “Don’t understand how Casper Ruud would lose such a game when he had victory right in his grasp.”
