The former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev takes on three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka in the round of 16 at Metz – 2022.
The Russian tennis pro’s year has been filled with hits and misses. After winning the US Open in 2021 and reaching the 2022 Australian Open final, it seemed that the year will belong to Medvedev. However, his inconsistent form has seen him lose matches he was expected to win.
The 26-year-old won the Libema Open and Los Cabos Open before being ousted in the round of 16 in the US Open. Medvedev also lost his No. 1 spot in the ATP rankings to 2022 US Open champion Carlos Alcaraz. He will be looking forward to starting afresh in Metz against the veteran Stan Wawrinka.
The 37-year-old has not been in great form this year. Prior to Metz 2022, Wawrinka won his last match in June against Frances Tiafoe in the Queen’s Club Championships. The Swiss star won a couple of qualifying matches against Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros to reach the main draw.
In the round of 32, Wawrinka defeated Portuguese veteran Joao Sousa in straight sets 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 to set up a clash with Daniil Medvedev.
The head-to-head currently stands at 2-1 in favor of Daniil Medvedev. They have only faced each other in Grand Slams till now. Wawrinka won the last encounter in the 2020 Australian Open in five sets.
Prediction: Daniil Medvedev to win in straight sets.
