World No. 65 Lorenzo Sonego will meet world No. 10 Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals in Metz 2022 on Saturday.
Lorenzo Sonego
The Italian tennis pro has reached his first semifinal since the 2022 Argentina Open, where he lost to home favorite Diego Schwartzman. Sonego has not had a great year thus far but he has played some fine tennis in Metz and is yet to drop a set.
The 27-year-old began his campaign against Aslan Karatsev. The Russian tennis pro put up a strong fight in the first set but eventually lost the match 5-7, 3-6. Gilles Simon faced Sonego in the round of 16. The latter managed to answer some tough questions that were asked by the Frenchman and eventually won the match 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. In the quarter-finals, Sonego got the better of Sebastian Korda in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
Hubert Hurkacz
The Polish star won the Halle Open after defeating Daniil Medvedev in straight sets in the final. He is certainly one of the favorites to win the tournament. Like Sonego, Hurkacz has also not dropped a set so far.
The 25-year-old received a first-round bye and took on the 2020 US Open champion Dominic Thiem in the round of 16. Hurkacz won the match 6-3, 6-4. In the quarter-finals, Hurkacz made light work of Arthur Rinderknech to win the match 6-3, 6-2. Hurkacz will want to use his serves to go effect as he has sent across 24 aces till now and has an average win percentage of 83.5 in the two matches he has played so far.
Head-to-Head and Prediction
Lorenzo Sonego has a 2-1 lead over Hubert Hurkacz in the head-to-head scoreline so far. The Italian star won their most recent encounter in the round of 16 of the 2020 Vienna Open in straight sets 7-6, 7-6.
Prediction: Hubert Hurkacz to win in three sets.
