In the two qualifiers, Wawrinka got the better of Laslo Djere and Zsombor Piros. In the first round of the main draw, the Swiss legend defeated Portugal’s Joao Sousa in straight sets 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Former world No. 1 Daniil Medvedev faced Wawrinka in the second round. The experienced campaigner dug deep to win the match 6-4, 6-7 (7-9), 6-3. The Russian star didn’t have a great game as he committed 9 double faults but take no credit away from Wawrinka’s gritty effort.

The Swedish youngster has had a topsy-turvy season so far. He came to Metz on the back of a disappointing US Open campaign, where he crashed out in the first round after losing to Jason Kubler.
Ymer began his campaign in Metz with a solid win against the experienced Adrian Mannarino in straight sets 7-5, 6-0. In the second round, the 24-year-old outplayed France’s Gregoire Barrere in straight sets 6-4, 6-3 to set up a clash with Stan Wawrinka.
