World No. 24 Matteo Berrettini takes on Swedish qualifier Elias Ymer in the round of 16 of the 2023 Mexican Open on Wednesday.
The former world No. 6 played in the inaugural United Cup competition to begin the season. Berrettini had a good start to the campaign as he defeated Hubert Hurkacz and Casper Ruud. He suffered losses against Stefanos Tsitsipas and Taylor Fritz though. The 26-year-old came into the tournament on the back of a disappointing first-round exit in the Australian Open.
In the round of 32, Berrettini handed a bagel to Alex Molcan in the first set. The No. 1 Slovak player pulled out during the second set while trailing 0-6, 0-1. Berrettini converted 4 out of 8 break points without being broken. He also smashed 5 aces in the encounter.
The 26-year-old played in the recently concluded Open 13 event. He was ousted by Gijs Brouwer in the round of 32 after winning the first set. In the first round of qualifying for the Mexican Open, Ymer eased past Bradley Klahn in straight sets 6-4, 6-4. Ymer produced another solid display in the second round to beat Guido Andreozzi 7-6, 6-3.
Ymer went on to face Adrian Mannarino in the round of 32. The French veteran won a tightly-contested first set. However, the youngster managed to bounce back strongly to eventually win the match 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Ymer had a win percentage of 76 on the first serve.
Matteo Berrettini has a 2-0 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Elias Ymer.
Prediction: Matteo Berrettini to win in straight sets.
