The Australian youngster has cruised into the quarterfinals of the Mexican Open with a couple of thumping wins. This is his third consecutive quarterfinal this season. In the first round, de Minaur made light work of Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez. The one-sided affair ended 6-1, 6-2 in favor of de Minaur who converted 5 out of 9 break points without being broken himself.
In the second round, the 24-year-old outplayed Matteo Berrettini’s brother, Jacopo Berrettini. The Italian qualifier had no answers for de Minaur’s consistency. The match ended 6-1, 6-0 in favor of de Minaur who had a win percentage of 78 on the first serve and converted 5 out of 6 break points. His serve wasn’t broken for the second match in a row.
Taro Daniel
The Japanese qualifier has produced his best result of the season by reaching the quarterfinals of a tournament for the first time. With wins against Juan Alejandro Hernandez Serrano and Brandon Holt, Daniel progressed to the main draw in Acapulco. In the round of 32, he played brilliantly to defeat J.J. Wolf in straight sets 6-4, 6-4.
The 30-year-old had an uphill task ahead of him as he faced 2nd seed Casper Ruud in the round of 16. However, the No. 2 Japanese played showed a lot of grit and determination to pick up a hard-fought 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (7-5) win, converting 2 out of 3 break points.
