4th seed Holger Rune takes on world No. 85 Nuno Borges in the round of 16 of the 2023 Mexican Open on Wednesday.
The talented Danish player did not have a great start to the season. He was ousted in the first round of the Adelaide International 1. In the Australian Open, Rune had a decent campaign as he made it to the fourth round for the first time. He followed it up with a run to the semifinals of the Montpellier Open. The 19-year-old retired during his second-round clash in the Rotterdam Open but has thankfully recovered in quick time.
Rune opened his Mexican Open campaign by facing another talented youngster, Ben Shelton. The American player won a closely-contested first set before Rune bounced back strongly to win 6-7 (7-9), 6-4, 6-2.
The 26-year-old began the season by playing in the Australian Open. He was ousted in the first round by Lorenzo Sonego. Borges went on to play the Delray Beach Open. He managed to progress to the main draw but lost to Miomir Kecmanovic in the round of 16. The Portuguese star came into the tournament after winning a Challenger event in Monterrey last month.
He got the better of American qualifier Nick Chappell in the round of 32. The match ended 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) in favor of Borges.
The two players have never faced each other as yet and therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Holger Rune to win in straight sets.
