The world No. 23 has also been in good form this season. He has reached his third consecutive quarterfinal. In the first round of the Mexican Open, Paul defeated Ecuadorian No. 1 Emilio Gomez 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Paul squared off with fellow American Michael Mmoh in the round of 16. After winning the first set 6-4, Paul was tied at 2-2 in the second set when his opponent was forced to retire owing to injury. Paul wasn’t broken in the match and he had a win percentage of 79 on the first serve.
