7th seed Tommy Paul faces fellow American Mackenzie McDonald in the quarterfinals of the 2023 Mexican Open on Thursday.
The 27-year-old has been in fine form as of late. He is one win away from reaching consecutive ATP semifinals. In the round of 32, McDonald made light work of Italian qualifier Luciano Darderi. The American athlete won the match 6-4, 6-2.

The world No. 23 has also been in good form this season. He has reached his third consecutive quarterfinal. In the first round of the Mexican Open, Paul defeated Ecuadorian No. 1 Emilio Gomez 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).
Paul squared off with fellow American Michael Mmoh in the round of 16. After winning the first set 6-4, Paul was tied at 2-2 in the second set when his opponent was forced to retire owing to injury. Paul wasn’t broken in the match and he had a win percentage of 79 on the first serve.
Tommy Paul and Mackenzie McDonald have played a lot of matches together but on the same team in doubles. Against each other, they have met only once and that was in the 2020 Mexican Open. Paul won the match 6-7, 6-4, 6-4 and therefore, leads the head-to-head 1-0.
