7th seed Tommy Paul squares off against compatriot Michael Mmoh in the round of 16 of the 2023 Mexican Open.
The world No. 23 has put in a couple of impressive performances thus far in the season. He managed to reach the semifinals of the Australian Open, his best result in a Grand Slam. Paul went on to play in the Delray Beach Open where he made it to the quarterfinals.
In the round of 32, Paul faced Ecuadorian No. 1 Emilio Gomez. The American athlete comprehensively won the first set before being made to work hard in the second set. The match eventually ended 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in favor of Paul. He had a win percentage of 77 on the first serve in the encounter.
The 25-year-old also made it to the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach Open with wins against Aleksandar Kovacevic and Denis Shapovalov. Mmoh eventually lost to Mackenzie McDonald.
In the round of 32 of the Mexican Open, Mmoh faced fellow American Marcos Giron. The first set was competitive but Mmoh managed to hold his nerves to seal it. The second set was a one-sided affair as Mmoh won the match 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. He converted 5 out of 6 break points in the encounter.
Michael Mmoh has a comprehensive 4-1 lead in the head-to-head scoreline against Tommy Paul. Mmoh defeated Paul in their most recent encounter in a Challenger event in 2019 in three sets 2-6, 7-6, 6-1.
