The experienced Tatjana Maria takes on 2019 Frech Open runner-up, Marketa Vondrousova in the round of 128 of the 2023 Miami Open on Tuesday.
The 35-year-old managed to win an ITF title in India in January. In the WTA circuit, Maria produced her best result in the Thailand Open, where she reached the quarterfinals with wins against Alex Eala and Dayana Yastremska.
The German star most recently played in Indian Wells where her campaign ended in the round of 64 with a loss to 8th seed Daria Kasatkina. In the first round, she had defeated Jasmine Paolini in straight sets. Last year in Miami, Maria was ousted in the second round of qualifying by Yue Yuan. This time Maria has directly made it into the main draw and will hope to have a decent run in the tournament.
The Czech youngster had a promising campaign in the Adelaide International 1, reaching the quarterfinals. Vondrousova made it to the semifinals in the Linz Open in February.
Like Maria, Vondrousova also played in Indian Wells where she showed her potential with wins against Marie Bouzkova and Ons Jabeur in straight sets. Vondrousova’s run ended in the round of 16 with a tight loss to Karolina Muchova.
Marketa Vondrousova will fancy her chances against Tatjana Maria as the youngster has defeated the experienced campaigner on two occasions. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 2-0 in favor of the Czech star. She outplayed Maria in their most recent encounter in the 2020 Adelaide International 1, winning in straight sets 6-3, 6-0.
Prediction: Marketa Vondrousova to win in two competitive sets.
