Two American tennis players, Sloane Stephens and Shelby Rogers lock horns in the round of 128 of the 2023 Miami Open on Wednesday.
It has been a rather topsy-turvy season for Sloane Stephens so far. She has played in six tournaments thus far in 2023. Stephens has reached two quarterfinals while in four tournaments, she was ousted in the first round.
Stephens made it to the quarterfinals in the Merida Open and the ATX Open. The 30-year-old most recently played in Indian Wells where her run ended with a loss to fellow American Sofia Kenin. The match ended 6-4, 6-1 in favor of Kenin. Last year in Miami, Stephens crashed out in the second round after losing to Jessica Pegula. In the round of 128, Stephens had beaten Panna Udvardy.
The 30-year-old produced her best result of the season when she made it to the quarterfinals of the 2023 Miami Open. Before coming to Miami, Rogers played in Indian Wells where she defeated compatriot Katie Volynets in the round of 128. However, in the following round, Rogers was ousted by 7th seed Maria Sakkari. This was after Rogers won the first set.
The South Carolina-born athlete played in Miami last year and made it to the third round with wins against Amanda Anisimova and Jelena Ostapenko. Rogers’ campaign ended when she lost to 21st seed Veronika Kudermetova in the round of 32.
This will be the first encounter between the two players. Therefore, the head-to-head scoreline currently stands at 0-0.
Prediction: Shelby Rogers to win in three sets.
