Michael K. Williams’ overdose death case: A New York City man accused of killing “The Wire” actor Michael K. Williams by overdosing entered a guilty plea in federal court on Wednesday and will likely spend at least five years behind bars, according to the prosecution.

One of four suspects accused in connection with the killings of Williams, who portrayed “Omar Little” in the popular HBO series in 2021 is Irvin Cartagena, a 39-year-old Brooklyn resident. According to investigators, Williams died after ingesting heroin that contained fentanyl.

According to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office for Southern New York, Cartagena entered a guilty plea on Wednesday to conspiring to distribute heroin, fentanyl, and fentanyl analog.

Michael K Williams engaged in the hand-to-hand transaction with Cartagena on September 5, 2021, the day before he was discovered dead, according to the prosecution.

Williams passed away as a result of ingesting the fentanyl-laced heroin, according to a statement from the U.S. attorney’s office.

An inquiry for comment on Wednesday night was not immediately answered by a Cartagena lawyer. According to the prosecution, Cartagena admitted to a drug plot but not to deliver the drugs that killed Williams, which is a statutory offense.

The U.S. attorney’s office estimates that Cartagena will spend a minimum of five years and a maximum of 40 years in prison after being sentenced. According to court documents, the sentencing date is August 18. Michael K Williams was discovered dead by police when they arrived at his Brooklyn flat at 2:00 PM on September 6, according to reports.

Michael K Williams has five Emmy nominations, the most recent of which came in 2021 for his portrayal of Montrose Freeman in HBO’s “Lovecraft County”.

He overdosed accidentally, according to a medical examiner. Michael K. Williams had previously spoken candidly about his battle with drug addiction.
