He began in 1991 with Lotus, whose performances were not impressive but the Finn’s obvious talent made him a driver in demand. In 1993 McLaren boss Ron Dennis signed him as a backup to Ayrton Senna and Michael Andretti.
The Finn was soft-spoken but showed his prowess on the tracks, famous for his overtakes and his consistency during the season.

Hakkinen made most of his income during his Formula 1 career. After his retirement from the sport, he moved into driver management and even drove in the DTM series till 2007. The Finn was paid handsomely during his time at McLaren and during his Championship winning seasons.

Mika Hakkinen F1 career
He was promoted after Michael Andretti was sacked by the team after the Italian Grand Prix in 1991. Hakkinen out-qualified teammate Ayrton Senna on his debut, in Portugal. After Senna’s move, the Finn was made the main driver at McLaren, but immediately was surrounded by controversy.
At Hockenheim, he caused a ten-car crash on the first lap and received a one-race ban for his role in the accident. The accident is still known as one of the worst in F1 history till date.
In 1995, he suffered a near-fatal accident that almost took his life. The incident happened during practice and found Hakkinen critically injured, bleeding profusely from the mouth and turning blue from lack of oxygen. He soon made his return to F1 after undergoing rehabilitation which affected his body.
In the last race of 1997 at Jerez, David Coulthard and Williams driver Jacques Villeneuve moved out of his way to let Hakkinen take his debut F1 win in his career.
The next season, Mika won half the season’s 16 races in splendid fashion to become the 1998 World Champion. He successfully defended his crown in 1999, after Michael Schumacher missed out due to injuries and became a 2-time World Champion.
He finally retired after the 2001 Japanese Grand Prix, the same year in which he won his last race in the United States.

He married Erja Honkanen in 1998, with whom he had two children, son Hugo Ronan and daughter Aina Julia. They filed for divorce in 2008.
He has three children with his second wife Markéta Remešová, whom he married in 2016.
