Zibanejad started playing hockey at age six in Hammarby IF after playing association football as a child. He then played for AIK IF before joining Djurgårdens IF’s J18 and J20 teams in the 2009-10 season. Zibanejad made his Elitserien debut in December 2010 and signed a two-year contract extension with Djurgården in February 2011. He scored five goals and nine points in 26 games, becoming the third most successful junior player under 18 in the organization. In January 2012, Zibanejad scored the game-winning goal in overtime for Sweden at the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships.
Zibanejad signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Ottawa Senators in July 2011. He joined the Senators for their first game in the 2011-12 season and got an assist. After one point in nine games, he was reassigned to Djurgårdens IF. In August 2012, he was announced to spend the 2012-13 season in North America with either the Senators or Binghamton Senators.
In 2016, Zibanejad was traded to the New York Rangers from the Senators along with a second-round pick. He suffered a broken left fibula during a game against the Florida Panthers in November 2016, which put him out for six to eight weeks. However, he returned to the Rangers’ lineup in January 2017 and scored two goals. Zibanejad also scored the overtime-winning goal in Game 5 of the 2017 NHL Eastern Conference quarterfinal. In 2017, he signed a five-year, $26.75 million contract extension with the Rangers. Zibanejad made history in the 2019-20 season by becoming the first player in NHL history to score four-point games in each of the first two games of the season.
He also became the third player in Rangers history to score five goals in a game in March 2020. In 2021, Zibanejad scored natural hat tricks in consecutive games and became the first Rangers player to achieve three hat tricks in a season since 2010. He signed an eight-year contract extension with the Rangers in October 2021 and was voted to his first All-Star game in January 2022.
