On 31 August 1999, Dragutin Kecmanovic and Maja Pavloc were blessed with a baby boy in Belgrade, Serbia. Miomir Kecmanovic’s parents are both doctors and specialists and abdominal surgery. Miomir began playing tennis at 6 with his maternal grandfather, Jovan Pavlov, who was a General in the Yugoslav People’s Army. He was named after his paternal grandfather, Prof. Miomir Kecmanovic, who played a crucial role in suppressing the 1972 Yugoslav smallpox outbreak.
At 13, Miomir moved to Florida with his aunt, Tanja Pavlov, a psychologist, to train at IMG Academy. His aunt also works as his manager. Kecmanovic can speak English, German and Serbian and enjoys watching movies and reading books. Apart from tennis, he also likes golf and basketball.
Miomir Kecmanovic won the Orange Bowl in a 3-set match against Stefanos Tsitsipas in three sets. He reached the final in the singles event at the 2016 Junior US Open where he lost to Felix Auger-Aliassime. He finished 2016 as ITF Juniors number 1 ranked tennis player.
Kecmanovic was the reserve player on the Serbian Davis Cup team in their quarterfinal tie against Great Britain in the 2016 Davis Cup.
In 2017, Kecmanovic turned pro and won his first singles title in the ITF circuit in Sunrise, Florida, US. Interestingly, Serbia’s Davis Cup captain Nenad Zimonjic planned to include Kecmanovic in the side as a fifth player for the Davis Cup quarter-final clash with Spain. However, Kecmanovic received a wildcard for the Panama Cup Challenger and he played in that event instead of the Davis Cup. Kecmanovic’s run in his first Challenger event ended in the first round.
Between May and July, Kecmanović played in four futures tournaments in Turkey and Belgium, respectively, winning two and reaching another final and one semifinal.
Kecanovic once again skipped being a reserve player at the Davis Cup semifinal against France as he received a wildcard to play in the Banja Luka Challenger. He won his first Challenger title in October 2017 in Suzhou by defeating Radu Albot in the final.
In 2018, Kecmanovic helped Springfield Lasers win their first World TeamTennis league championship. Kecmanovic bounced back after a 1-3 deficit in the final set to win his match 5-3 in the final and earned Finals MVP honors.
The Serbian youngster ended 2018 on a strong note by finishing runner-up at the Liuzhou Challenger and winning the Shenzhen Challenger.
In 2019, Kecmanovic won the World TeamTennis league for the second time. He also earned his first ATP victory in 2019 by defeating Leonardo Mayer at the Brisbane International. Kecmanovic broke into the top 100 for the first time after reaching the quarterfinals at the BNP Paribas Open.
He also secured his first win at a major when he defeated Denis Kudla in the first round of the 2019 French Open. Following this tournament, Kecmanovic reached his first ATP final, where he lost to Lorenzo Sonego.
In 2020, Kecmanovic won his first ATP title at the Austrian Open in September by defeating Yannick Hanfmann in the final.
Kecmanovic’s best result in 2021 came at the Argentina Open where he made it to the semifinals. He also hired David Nalbandian as his coach for a trial period.
In 2022, Kecmanovic produced his best result so far at a major when he made it to the fourth round of the Australian Open.
Miomir Kecmanovic has won 93 singles matches and lost 88 with a win percentage of 51.4 (in ATP Tour and Grand Slam main draw matches, and Davis Cup). He has one title in his cabinet and reached a career-high ranking of world No. 28 on 24 October 2022.
