Jacob DeGrom is leaving the New York Mets to head to the Texas Rangers as he signed a new $185 million contract.
Jacob deGrom, a two-time winner of the Cy Young Award and one of baseball’s most dominant pitchers even though injuries limited his availability, cashed in on his pedigree by agreeing to a staggering five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers on Friday. DeGrom’s new deal is a testament to his standing as one of the game’s most talented hurlers.
The astounding two-year run in which the struggling Rangers have shelled out $741 million for free agents, including $500 million for middle infielders Corey Seager and Marcus Semien almost precisely one year ago, continues with the signing of the right-handed pitcher, which was revealed by the team.
As per Jeff Passan of ESPN: BREAKING: Right-hander Jacob deGrom has signed a five-year, $185 million contract with the Texas Rangers, sources tell ESPN. Physical is passed. Deal is done. Includes conditional sixth-year option that would take total deal to $222 million. Full no-trade clause. A massive haul.
Jacob DeGrom will have a salary guarantee of $37 million per year, which is second only to the $43.3 million per year that former colleague Max Scherzer received from the Mets as part of a three-year agreement. Gerrit Cole, a right-handed pitcher for the Yankees, has a nine-year, $324 million contract he will sign after the 2019 season. DeGrom makes more than Cole’s annual salary of $36 million.
The presence of Corey Seager, Marcus Semien, and J.D. DeGrom will likely put the Texas Rangers in the right direction. They will hope to qualify for the playoffs, which is their goal for this season.
