All you need to know about the Drew Rasmussen injury and the amount of time that he will be sidelined for due to it.

Drew Rasmussen injury

Drew Rasmussen, a right-handed starter for the Tampa Bay Rays, was placed on the 60-day injured list with a flexor strain in his throwing elbow on Friday, a decision that came as a complete and total surprise. Rasmussen is hoping to avoid having surgery, but he will be sidelined for the next eight weeks nonetheless. This information comes from Marc Topkin. This puts him on schedule to make his comeback in August if there are no further complications.

Despite the fact that they have an MLB-best 30-9 record and are in first place in the challenging American League East, the Rays have been dealt a significant blow by pitching injuries so far this season.

Shane Baz and Jeffrey Springs are both out after undergoing Tommy John surgery, and it seems likely that they will miss the rest of the 2023 season (at least, that is the case for Springs, who underwent the treatment in April). Jeffrey Springs is expected to miss the rest of the season. In addition to this, the team’s ace pitcher Tyler Glasnow is not available because he is currently recovering from an oblique injury he sustained during spring training.

Rasmussen, who will turn 27 later this year, has had a phenomenal year thus far with the Rays in 2023. He has made eight starts and thrown a total of 44 2/3 innings, compiling an earned run average of 2.62 and a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.27. Similar figures were posted by him during his first full season with Tampa Bay in 2022, which consisted of 28 starts and 146 innings pitched.

Rasmussen was initially acquired by the Rays in a deal with the Brewers that took place in May 2021. The trade was most notable because it involved the shortstop Willy Adames and took place. Rasmussen, who is now an essential part of the Rays’ rotation, will be out of commission for at least the next two months.

When was Drew Rasmussen drafted into MLB?

In the Major League Baseball draft that took place in 2017, the Tampa Bay Rays selected Drew Rasmussen in the first round with the 31st overall choice. Rasmussen was a pitcher who excelled throughout his time at Oregon State University, earning him a reputation as one of the top prospects to come out of that school. Because of his fastball that could reach into the mid-90s and his razor-sharp slider, he was considered a top prospect going into the draught.

After being selected in the draught, Rasmussen started his professional career in the minor league system of the Rays. There, he immediately established himself as one of the most promising pitching prospects in the organization. He pitched in the minor leagues for parts of three different seasons, during which time he advanced up the levels and improved his talents as a pitcher.

In 2020, Rasmussen made his debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) with the Rays. He did so by participating in six games out of the bullpen. He was effective in his few appearances on the mound, recording a 4.66 earned run average and fanning 13 batters during 9.2 innings of work.

Rasmussen was successful as a starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers after being traded to them following the conclusion of the 2020 season. During the 2021 season, he appeared for the Brewers and made 13 starts, pitching 65.1 innings and recording a 4.54 earned run average while striking out 86 batters. So far in his career, he has 20 wins, 10 losses, an ERA of 2.97 and 266 strikeouts
