Seattle Mariners are going to the playoffs for the first time since 2001, and it came after a walk-off home run by Cal Releigh.
Cal Raleigh hit a game-winning home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to send the Mariners to the postseason for the first time since 2001, and the Seattle Mariners ended baseball’s longest playoff drought with a 2-1 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Friday night.
Seattle’s celebration on the field lasted quite long and players relieved themselves of the burden of two decades without seeing their baseball team make the playoffs.
It had indeed been a long wait – the Mariners last advanced to play spotlight games in October, led by rookies Ichiro Suzuki and Edgar Martinez and managed by Lou Piniella.
The Seattle Mariners join the New York Yankees, the Houston Astros, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Cleveland Guardians as the teams to qualify for the playoffs from the American League, and their fans will be very excited to see them playing in the playoffs after more than 20 years.
