Jacob deGrom, the star pitcher for the Texas Rangers, is scheduled to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will ruin his season and bring an early stop to his first year with the Rangers after signing a $185 million, five-year contract with the team. General manager Chris Young stated on Tuesday that the decision to operate on deGrom’s injured right elbow came after an MRI was performed on the player.
The two-time winner of the National League Cy Young Award hadn’t pitched since April 28, when he left his start against the New York Yankees early due to injury concerns for the second time in a period of three starts. Since then, he hadn’t pitched at all. The news that deGrom would be undergoing surgery was broken a day after he was placed on the disabled list for a period of 60 days. According to Young, the most recent MRI indicated increased inflammation as well as severe structural damage, both of which weren’t present in the scan taken after deGrom left the game against the Yankees.
After deGrom had spent his first nine big league seasons with the New York Mets, the Rangers took advantage of his free agency and signed him. deGrom will turn 35 later this month. Because of injuries, he was only able to pitch 156 innings and make 26 starts over his final two years in New York. Before going on the disabled list for the final three months of the 2021 season with right forearm tightness and a sprained elbow, DeGrom pitched 92 innings and posted his career-lowest earned run average of 1.08 during the season.
After being forced to sit out the latter part of spring training due to a stress response in his right scapula, the four-time All-Star didn’t make his first start in the major leagues until the second of August of the previous year.

Jacob DeGrom had an impressive collegiate career before making his way to the MLB. He attended Stetson University in DeLand, Florida, where he showcased his exceptional skills and solidified his status as a top prospect. Scouts took notice of his remarkable progress and talent, and he was selected in the ninth round of the 2010 MLB draft by the New York Mets.
After signing with the Mets, deGrom began his professional journey through the minor leagues. He worked his way up the ranks, showcasing his exceptional pitching repertoire and impressive consistency. His remarkable success in the minors led to his major league debut on May 15, 2014.
