After injuring his right knee while celebrating a victory in the World Baseball Classic, New York Mets closer Edwin D.az has been diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon and is projected to miss all of the upcoming baseball season.

According to Billy Eppler, the general manager of the Mets, Diaz is scheduled to have surgery on Thursday. Eppler stated, without getting into numbers, that the typical time frame for rehabilitation from an accident of this nature is approximately eight months.

Puerto Rico advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday night thanks to a 5-2 victory over the Dominican Republic. D.az, who will turn 29 in the following week, retired the side in the ninth inning without allowing a run to score. Right-hander D’az and his teammates were jumping in the infield when the right-hander collapsed and reached for his right leg. D’az was injured. The medical personnel wheeled him off the field in a wheelchair.

After Dáz’s phenomenal performance in 2022, the Mets decided to reward him with the richest contract ever given to a closer: a five-year deal worth a total of $102 million. The World Boxing Council (WBC) provides insurance coverage for all player contracts, and this coverage extends for as long as the player is sidelined due to an injury sustained during the event.

Last year, Dáz finished the season with a record of 3-1, a 1.31 earned run average, 32 saves out of 35 opportunities, and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings pitched. He was selected for the All-Star game for the second time and finished ninth in the vote for the Cy Young Award.
