All you need to know about when Frankie Montas will make his much-awaited return in the upcoming 2023 MLB season.
On February 21, starting pitcher of the New York Yankees, Frankie Montas, had surgery on his shoulder. It would be ideal for Montas to make his comeback towards the back half of the season. Because of the shoulder irritation that Montas experienced in the previous season, it was always anticipated that he would miss at least the first month of the 2023 campaign due to his absence. According to statements made by Yankees general manager Brian Cashman in January, the veteran hurler was eight weeks behind schedule in his throwing regimen.
During the previous baseball season, the New York Yankees made a deal with the Oakland Athletics to obtain Montas and Lou Trivino. As part of the trade, they sent back to Oakland the pitching trio of Ken Waldichuk, JP Sears, and Luis Medina, as well as the infielder Cooper Bowman.
The fact that Montas has spent his whole career in Oakland as a consistent starter provided the Yankees with reason to have hope that he may contribute to an improvement in the rotation in 2022. Nevertheless, the 29-year-old pitcher, who had shoulder inflammation and was placed on the 15-day injured list in September, struggled in eight appearances with the Yankees during the previous season. In 39.2 innings pitched, he had a career-worst ERA of 6.35, a WHIP of 1.59, and 33 strikeouts.
The Yankees have already lost numerous starting pitchers in the lead-up to the new season, and the loss of Montas, which could keep him out for the entire 2023 campaign, is a significant setback for the team.
