All you need to know about when Joe Musgrove will make his much-awaited return in the upcoming 2023 MLB season.
Joe Musgrove, the starting pitcher for the San Diego Padres, was injured earlier this month in an accident that took place in the weight room. After sustaining a fracture to his left big toe, Joe Musgrove announced that he would be out of action for an indefinite amount of time. This accident caused significant damage to the San Diego Padres.
Musgrove was a viable candidate to start for the Padres on opening day in 2022 after achieving an earned run average (ERA) of 2.93 over the course of 181 innings pitched in the previous season. The player, who was born and raised in San Diego, is now under the terms of a contract that was finalized in August and is set to pay him a cumulative sum of $100 million over the course of the next five years.
The Padres will have little choice but to immediately rely on the organizational depth of their starting pitching staff, which they have been praising as being especially strong. If a potential starter like Reiss Knehr, Jay Groome, Brent Honeywell, Julio Teheran, or Ryan Weathers shows throughout spring training that he is deserving of a spot in the rotation, then the plan to use a six-man rotation to begin the season will not be canceled as a result.
It is believed that Musgrove will be back in the lineup around the middle of April. This is roughly the same time when Fernando Tatis Jr. would be eligible to play again after serving his suspension.
