All you need to know about when Luis Severino will make his much-awaited return in the upcoming 2023 MLB season.
According to Aaron Boone, the manager of the New York Yankees, right-handed pitcher Luis Severino will most likely be placed on the 15-day injured list. Severino is the third pitcher who was slated to be part of New York’s Opening Day rotation but will instead start the season on the injured list.
While Carlos Rodon was sidelined with a moderate forearm strain but has at least been back throwing, Frankie Montas’ season is in risk after he underwent shoulder surgery. Rodon was able to return to throwing after his injury. Because of these absences, Domingo German and Clarke Schmidt have been promoted to rotation duties, and the Yankees will now have to utilise their depth once more in order to find Severino’s replacement.
Even though the Yankees will have two days off during the first nine days of the regular season, they will still require a fifth starter in order to complete one cycle through their starting rotation. Given that Boone has allowed some wiggle space regarding the IL placement and the severity of the injury, the best-case scenario for Severino would be for him to miss only one or two starts at the most. This would be the case even if the injury was more severe.
Yet, Severino lost over two months of action during the previous season due to a similar lat strain on his right side. Thus, there is no assurance that this latest injury could be a short-term problem.
