Corey Kluber, a two-time winner of the Cy Young Award, was formally signed by the Red Sox in January to a one-year deal that includes a club option for 2024. This came after the Red Sox had to say goodbye to veteran pitchers Nathan Eovaldi (Rangers) and Rich Hill (Pirates) when they went their separate ways due to free agency. As per sources, the deal is worth $10 million, and that the option is for $11 million. The terms of the pact were not published.
In order for the Red Sox to make room for Kluber on their 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Connor Seabold was designated for assignment. At the Winter Meetings earlier this month, both the Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom and the Manager Alex Cora acknowledged that obtaining more starting pitching was a priority for the organization.
But things were slow going on the rotation front until the agreement with Kluber, which was initially reported in late December. This was the case even though the organization addressed voids via free agency in the bullpen (Kenley Jansen, Chris Martin, and Joely Rodrguez) and the lineup (Masataka Yoshida and Justin Turner).
After signing a one-year contract worth $8 million with the Rays during the offseason prior to the 2022 season, Kluber pitched 164 innings across 31 starts and finished the year with a 4.34 earned run average and a 1.21 walk-to-hit ratio.
The veteran had only thrown 116 2/3 innings over the course of the previous three seasons combined owing to a variety of significant injuries, including a fractured right forearm in 2019, a torn teres major muscle in his right shoulder in 2020, and a right shoulder strain in 2021. In 2021, the veteran suffered a right shoulder strain.
Corey Kluber was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and attended Coppell High School in Coppell, Texas, where he participated in baseball while he was a high school student. After that, he got his education at Stetson University, which is located in DeLand, Florida. While there, he was honored as the best pitcher in the Atlantic Sun Conference in 2007, and he was later inducted into the Stetson Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.
When Kluber threw at the World Wood Bat Championships in Jupiter, Florida, the coaches at Stetson University began to take note of him. The tournament is held annually. Kluber was selected by the San Diego Padres in the fourth round of the 2007 draft. In 2010, the Padres participated in a three-team trade that sent Kluber to the Cleveland Indians. In 2013, Kluber established himself as a regular member of the Indians’ starting rotation. After reaching an extension agreement with the Indians in April 2015 that was to last for five years and pay him $38.5 million, he was given a deal that was extended through 2020 and included a club option for 2021.
After an injury-riddled 2019 campaign for Kluber, the Indians parted ways with him in December 2019, and he was then traded to the Rangers, where he once again missed most of the 2020 season due to injury. He inked deals to play for the Yankees in the year 2021 and for the Rays the following year in 2022.
Kluber has won the Cy Young Award in the American League (AL) twice, including in 2014, which was his second full season in the major leagues, and in 2017. He has also been selected as an MLB All-Star on three separate occasions. In 2016, the American League Starting Pitcher of the Year award was bestowed upon him by Sporting News.
