Adam Frazier has signed a one-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles worth $8 million. The deal was agreed between the two parties. The Mariners made a trade with San Diego over the offseason of the previous year in order to acquire Frazier for the purpose of making him their everyday second baseman. Frazier turned 31 in the previous year.
He had just finished an All-Star season in 2021, during which he had compiled a slash line of.305/.368/.411, along with 36 doubles, five triples, five home runs, 43 RBI, 48 walks, and 69 strikeouts while playing for the Pirates and the Padres, respectively. His 2022 campaign did not live up to his expectations statistically or monetarily. Adam Frazier’s 2022 campaign did not match his expectations.
The versatile infielder was able to be a part of the magical season that the Mariners had, which included the team’s first playoff appearance since 2001 and a postseason run that featured Frazier, who was playing in his first postseason, getting the game-winning hit in a crazy comeback win over the Blue Jays that secured the wild-card series. The postseason run also included the Mariners making their first playoff appearance since 2001.
Last year, Frazier concluded the season with a batting line of.238/.301/.311 in 156 games. He also had 22 doubles, four triples, three home runs, and 42 RBI in those 156 games. When excluding the abbreviated 2020 season, Frazier posted career lows in all three offensive categories: batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.
Adam Frazier graduated high school from Oconee County High School in Watkinsville, Georgia in the year 2010. Frazier decided to pursue his baseball career at the collegiate level and enrolled at Mississippi State University in order to play for the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
As a freshman, he had limited playing time. During his sophomore year at Mississippi State University in 2012, Frazier established a new record for the number of assists in a single season at 227, was named the most valuable player of the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Baseball Tournament, and was selected for the United States national collegiate baseball team.
During the Major League Baseball draught in 2013, the Pittsburgh Pirates selected Frazier with the 179th overall pick, which was in the sixth round. Frazier received a signing bonus of $240,600 from the Pirates after he signed with the team. Following his signing, Frazier was sent to the Jamestown Jammers of the Class A-Short Season New York–Penn League, where he spent the rest of the season playing baseball.
He played in 58 games and had a slash line of.321/.399/.362 with 27 runs batted in. In 2014, he participated in 121 games for the Bradenton Marauders of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League. At the end of the season, he had a batting average of.252, one home run, and 42 RBIs.
Frazier was sent to the San Diego Padres along with $1.4 million in cash by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021. The Padres received the shortstop Tucupita Marcano, the pitcher Michell Miliano, and the outfielder Jack Suwinski in return for Frazier. He led all of the big leagues in line drive percentage in 2021, hitting 29.4% of his balls in play, while also batting.305/.368/.411.
In the latter part of that season, the Padres dealt Frazier to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for pitcher Ray Kerr and outfielder Corey Rosier. Prior to the trade, he set career-highs for appearances in games played (156) and stolen bases (11). His offensive statistics took a nosedive from the season before, as he batted.238/.301/.311 in the new season.
In addition to the 124 games he played at second base, he also participated in the defensive aspects of the game at shortstop and all three outfield positions. In his first playoffs with the Mariners, he played five games and recorded five hits, including one double, three runs scored, one run batted in, and one walk.
