Jazz Chisholm

Miami Marlins Jazz Chisholm Jr., made his major league debut as a center fielder yesterday against the Cardinals. Before this point in his career, Chisholm had spent his entire career playing in the middle infield position. However, after the Marlins made offseason trades to acquire Luis Arraez, a former hitter for the Twins, and Jean Segura, a free-agent infielder, the Marlins decided to test Chisholm out in center field.

Although unconventional, the move is not without precedent; for example, it is anticipated that Padres phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. may switch positions this season, playing outfield instead of his natural shortstop position in order to make room for newly acquired Xander Bogaerts. Back in 2018, the Mariners experimented with Dee Strange-Gordon in the starting rotation, but the move was ultimately unsuccessful.

Throughout the course of the spring, Chisholm will be picking up the skills necessary to play center field on the fly. If the experiment were to be successful, it would provide the Marlins with a multi-year option in center field, as Chisholm is under the team’s ownership until 2026.

After struggling for years to put the pieces of the position together, he finally succeeded. They pieced together output from Jesus Sanchez, JJ Bleday, and Bryan De La Cruz in 2022, all of whom are better suited for an outfield corner position than an infield corner position. Since then, Bleday has been sent to the Athletics in a trade.
