All you need to know about if Jordan Walker is coming back to the St. Louis Cardinals MLB squad following his stint in triple AA.
The St. Louis Cardinals intend to recall top outfield prospect Jordan Walker from his assignment at Triple-A Memphis. He is scheduled to make his debut with the major league club on Friday, when the series begins in Pittsburgh. It is expected that the Cardinals will make an announcement regarding the corresponding change to their active roster tomorrow.
Walker will play in the Major Leagues for the second time. The young player, who is only 21 years old, made his debut with St. Louis on Opening Day, playing right field. In his first month on the job, he did not struggle to keep up with his competition. Early on in the season, Walker drew news for having a hitting streak of 12 games and hitting close to the league average.274/.321/.397 over the course of 20 competitions.
In spite of this, St. Louis took the choice at the end of April to demote him to a lower level of the minor leagues. Walker’s defensive marks weren’t very excellent, and his strong slash line at the plate belied his increasing rates of ground balls and chases at the plate. Given Walker’s age and the fact that St. Louis had promoted him to the major leagues from Double-A so quickly in the first place, the relegation didn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone.
Despite the fact that the former first-round choice got off to a rather sluggish start in Memphis, he has really picked it up as of late. In his last 23 games, Walker has a batting average of.267, a slugging percentage of.376 and a slugging percentage of.433. He has walked 11.9% of the time and struck out 21.1% of the time. The 60.4% rate at which he placed the ball on the ground in the majors is significantly higher than the 44.6% rate at which he put the ball on the ground in Triple-A.
After evaluating him, the Cardinals came to the conclusion that he is prepared for another shot at the top level. Over the past two weeks, St. Louis’ outfield has been significantly less populated. Since Walker was given the choice to play for another team, both Tyler O’Neill and Dylan Carlson have been placed on the injured list. O’Neill continues to struggle with back troubles, so it is unclear when he will be able to return to work.
When was Jordan Walker drafted?
Jordan Walker was born in 2002 and attended Decatur High School, where he played baseball. During his junior year in 2019, he had a batting average of.519 with 17 home runs, 60 RBIs, and 24 stolen bases. [In his senior year of 2020, he was crowned the Georgia Gatorade Player of the Year after batting.457 with four home runs and 15 RBIs in 16 games before the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
He has selected to play baseball for Duke University’s college squad. Walker was selected with the 21st overall choice in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2020 by the St. Louis Cardinals. Walker inked a contract with the Cardinals on June 23 and received a $2.9 million signing bonus.
Because the minor league season was suspended in 2020 due to the epidemic, he did not play for any of the league’s affiliates. The Cardinals assigned Walker to the Palm Beach Cardinals of the Low-A Southeast league in 2021. On the first pitch of his debut at-bat in the major leagues, he blasted a home run.
The Cardinals’ president of baseball operations, John Mozeliak, said on March 25, 2023, that Walker will be on the team’s Opening Day roster. Walker made his major league debut with the Cardinals on March 30, starting in right field and getting his first hit and run batted in. Walker blasted his first major league home run today, and he is already well on his way to being a major player.
