All you need to know about the special record that Spencer Strider of the Atlanta Braves broke against the Miami Marlins.
Spencer Strider, the starting pitcher for the Atlanta Braves, was the focus of the story. Monday night at Truist Park, despite the fact that his offence gave him plenty of support, which included five home runs as part of Atlanta’s 11-0 victory. When Strider had a perfect game through the first six innings of the game, the conversation shifted away from the strikeouts that he had racked up earlier in the night (we’ll get back to that later).
The final line for Strider was absolutely incredible: 8 innings pitched, 2 hits, 0 runs, 0 walks, 13 strikeouts. Strider has now gone nine starts in a row without allowing less than nine hits while striking out at least nine batters each time. The Atlanta Braves have now established a new record for their franchise, surpassing John Smoltz’s streak of eight consecutive wins during the 1997 season. Strider has recently been added to a very short list of pitchers who belong to the same club.
He had already cut through the Marlins order twice with relative ease, and it appeared that he hadn’t even broken a sweat in the process. It was 18 points up and 18 points down. Strider made it through the seventh inning without allowing a hit, which means that the conversation has shifted to whether or not he will throw a no-hitter.
Since the 8th of April, 1994, when Kent Mercker pitched a no-hitter against the Dodgers in Los Angeles and won by a score of 6-0, the Braves have not had a no-hitter. In the history of the franchise, they have 14, but only three of them (Mercker, Phil Niekro, and a combined no-hitter in 1991) have occurred after the franchise moved to Atlanta. Mercker was the only pitcher to throw a perfect game after the move.
Spencer Strider is critical to Braves success
Now that all of that is out of the way, we can zero in on the strikeouts and give them our full attention. He is scheduled to play against the Mets at Citi Field on Saturday, provided that everything goes according to plan. That should be enjoyable. The Mets entered Monday as the second-most difficult team in the major leagues in terms of striking out batters (as measured by a team’s strikeout percentage, or K%).
Against the Mets, Strider has a career earned run average of 4.30 and has recorded 17 strikeouts in 14.2/3 innings pitched against them. The one and only time he faced them at Citi Field, he had a pretty bad outing, as he gave up four runs on six hits in just two and two-thirds innings. His three starts against the Mets have resulted in a total of eight, five, and four strikeouts, so he has not reached the nine-strikeout plateau.
However, at the moment, Strider is considered to be one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. In his five starts so far this season, he has a record of 3-0 with an earned run average of 1.80, a walk-to-strikeout ratio of 0.83, and 49 strikeouts against 11 walks across 30 innings pitched.
Given that the Atlanta Braves have goals of winning the World Series, having Spencer Strider on their team is essential to their overall success. To this point, he has pitched at the level of the best pitcher in baseball; it is the hope of the Braves’ fans that he will maintain this level of performance throughout the rest of the season.
