Boston Red Sox outfielder Alex Verdugo was left impressed by Mexico’s efforts in their iconic win over Puerto Rico in WBC.
After making an incredible comeback against Puerto Rico on Friday, Mexico will be moving on to the World Baseball Classic semifinals for the first time in the nation’s history. During the quarterfinal game, Kiké Hernández made a spectacular catch, but it was a Boston Red Sox member on the opposing team who got the final word.
During Mexico’s comeback victory at loanDepot park, Alex Verdugo had a 1-for-3 hitting performance with a single that drove in a run, a run scored, and a walk. After the first inning, Mexico had a 4-0 lead over Puerto Rico, but in the second and third innings, they outscored Puerto Rico 5-1 to earn a spot in the semifinals versus Japan.
When Verdugo was questioned about assembling the team around the pitcher’s mound, he responded by saying, “They don’t need to perform single-file handshakes. Instead, they did the group hug because it was a group effort and it deserved a group celebration.”
After the win, Verdugo said, “I don’t even know how to put it into words, man, We were down 4-0 and coming back, scratching back — our pitchers keeping up in the game, our offense with timely hitting, key walks, that’s baseball. I’ve been saying it this whole time. That’s why I love this game.”
