All you need to know about what did MLB umpire Randy Rosenberg do since he is in the news a lot today.
Even though spring training hasn’t even started yet, at least one of the umpires is already getting a lot of attention for all the wrong reasons. JT Realmuto, the catcher for the Philadelphia Phillies, was removed from Monday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays by the home plate umpire Randy Rosenberg for a very minor offence.
Realmuto put his glove back on the ground after holding it over his head in an attempt to get Rosenberg to throw him a new baseball. Rosenberg was unable to deliver the ball to Realmuto right away.
Realmuto appeared to have the impression that Rosenberg was aiming the baseball directly at the pitcher’s mound. On the other hand, Rosenberg interpreted it as a sign of contempt and kicked Realmuto out of the game.
Realmuto was not even looking in Rosenberg’s direction at that point. This seems to be a textbook case of the umpire going beyond with his reaction. During the spring, we have heard of several umpires in addition to this one. I really hope that this does not portend anything bad that will happen once the regular season gets underway.
