All you need to know about why Aaron Hicks is no longer playing for the New York Yankees in the MLB.
Aaron Hicks, a veteran outfielder for the New York Yankees, has been designated for assignment by the team. Even though the Yankees have not yet made the transaction official, it is expected that it will clear the way for the team to activate outfielder Greg Allen, who they acquired from the Red Sox the previous evening.
Hicks has not gotten off to a good start to the season, as evidenced by the fact that in 76 at-bats, he has only hit.188/.263/.261 and has not yet hit a home run. He had fallen down the pecking order in New York, where the team frequently preferred to start infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the outfield over him for opportunities to play there. In addition to that, he is walking at a rate that is at its lowest level since 2016, striking out at a higher rate, and defensive metrics have not looked favorably on his work in left field so far this season.
The move will be expensive for the Yankees because Hicks still owes them $19.57 million between $9.8 million in salaries in 2024 and 2025 and a $1 million buyout on a $12.5 million club option for 2026. In addition, the remaining portion of his salary of $10.8 million will be due to him in 2023.
Hicks will now be put on waivers, but due to his poor play this season and the fact that he still owes money, it is almost certain that he will not be claimed by another team. Instead, the Yankees could make an offer to eat the remainder of his contract and try to trade him to another team; alternatively, he could be released after clearing waivers if no other team was interested in him. The decision was made public by the Yankees, who also confirmed the addition of Greg Allen to the active roster as a result of the transaction.
